Excused Absences
The Student Academic Policy statea that a "student shall not be penalized for an excused absence." Students, as required by the course syllabus, should submit documentation from an official entity (e.g. health care provider) to their course instructors to excuse their absence(s).
Students missing any graded work due to an excused absence bear the responsibility of informing their Instructor about their excused absence as soon as possible, and must do so within five business days following the period of the excused absence.
Advance notification is required for absences involving a major religious holiday (see the course syllabus for the specific requirement) and for University sponsored trips, when possible, and in no case shall be more than five business days after the absence.
Unexcused Absences
The Student Academic Policy allows the Instructor of Record to define any course policy relating to unexcused absences in the course syllabus. The rule states that "if the stated policy does not permit a penalty, the Instructor of Record shall not penalize the student for the unexcused absence."
