The University Senate Rules state that a zero on the assignment is the minimum penalty.  Instructors may impose additional penalties such as requiring an additional assignment or reducing the student's final grade by a certain number of levels.

For a first offense, if the offense is deemed egregious, the instructor may fail the student in the course, a grade of E. The Rules also require that a harsher penalty be imposed if a student commits a subsequent offense.

The following is a list of the penalties that can be imposed:

  • zero on the assignment (minimum penalty)
    • the instructor may impose additional penalties such as requiring an additional assignment or reducing the student's final grade by a certain number of levels
  • failure in course (grade of E or F in the course)
  • XE in course (a notation on the student's transcript that an academic offense occurred)
    • an XE may be imposed with suspension
  • suspension
  • dismissal
  • expulsion
