Due Process
All University employees and faculty must provide due process before imposing a disciplinary action against a student. In all circumstances, the student is presumed innocent, and the University has the burden of proof.
Due process is provided for academic offense cases by providing the student the opportunity to meet with the instructor and department chair to inquire how the student completed the work in question. The meeting should not be adversarial.
Students Right to remain in the course
Students have the right to remain in the course while the process is underway and the Registrar should be informed if the student withdraws. Students cannot withdraw from a course in which an academic offense has been committed.
Confidentiality
Additionally, the academic offense process is confidential and only those involved in the process, and those with an academic need to know, may be informed. For example, it is not appropriate to inform students' advisors or other program faculty.
SACSCOC Compliance
To comply with SACSCOC requirements, the Academic Ombud, ombud@uky.edu, must be copied on all emails to students and employees that involve suspected academic offenses.
